One good thing about the bus is the view into other people's cars your elevated situation as a rider provides you. Some morning on your way in to work, tear yourself away from your BlackBerry and take a look out the window. You'll be fascinated -- and horrified -- by what you see. Just yesterday I saw three people carrying on non-hands-free conversations on their cell phones while driving. (Have these people not heard of speakerphone? Of Bluetooth headsets? Wireless communication has made some wonderful advancements in the last few years. Really.)
But that's nothing. I've seen people eating their breakfast while driving -- not a granola bar or a banana, either, but yogurt with a spoon. Waffles. Things that require at least two hands to consume. And I regularly see people reading while driving -- like "Harry Potter" and Mary Higgins Clark reading, not map reading, which is bad enough.
Something to think about the next time you're waiting for an accident to be cleared on Rte. 3.
